Modern ADUs in Salt Lake City

A modern ADU in Salt Lake City is still an accessory dwelling unit: a second home on a lot you already own. The look — flat roof, cedar, large glass — does not change the permit path. Salt Lake City’s zone, parking, and any overlay do.

Three modern forms, one city process

Salt Lake City: internal ADUs allowed; detached ADUs allowed. Owner occupancy applies.

An internal suite keeps the new living space inside the house. A garage conversion reuses a building you already have. A detached casita is a new backyard structure and follows the detached rules, including the statewide floor for qualifying lots of about 11,000 sq ft beginning October 1, 2026.
